I am bit of a Gypsy – and I mean that quite literally, my grandmother was a Roma – who has no roots and holds no patriotic loyalty to any country. I have enjoyed travelling the world and experiencing different cultures.
I came to Brazil over 4 years ago for a 3 week holiday and here I still am.
I found the country to be so different to any that I had lived in, full of contradictions and vast differences and the more I lived and learned the culture, the greater the contradictions appeared. I have so many stories from the class differences to the incredible bureaucracy and corruption that is endemic to this country and it is for this reason that I devised Bizarre Bites of Brazil and wanted to share my interpretation with the world, but be cautious, this is merely my interpretation based on the filters I have created in my mind to analyse said world. Your experiences may and should be wholly different if you come or are already here.
I was once asked if I expected to see monkeys on the streets in Brazil when I arrived, to which I replied of course not! I am a man of the world, after all. Well, my world was shaken yesterday when I saw a monkey crossing a power line in Rio.
Likewise, I was asked if I expected kangaroos hopping down the streets in the cities in Australia when I first arrived there and the one and only time I hit a kangaroo with my car was in a city!!!!
